French Beans for Export — 60-Day Cycle
A precision guide to growing Grade 1 French beans for export to the EU and UK markets. Covers MRL-compliant pest management, food safety (GlobalGAP requirements), post-harvest cold chain, and links to Nairobi exporters. Ideal for farmers in Kirinyaga, Murang'a, and Meru.

Sample Schedule (First 2 Weeks)
Field Selection & GlobalGAP Pre-Assessment
Select a field with good drainage, no recent pesticide misuse, and access to clean water. Start GlobalGAP documentation folder: farm map, water source certificate, input records.
Soil Preparation
Plough to 20 cm, incorporate 5 t/ha compost. Target soil pH 5.8–6.8. French beans do not tolerate waterlogging — raised beds are essential in high-rainfall areas.
Seed Selection & Treatment
Use certified seed of export-approved varieties: Amy, Samantha, or Teresa. Treat with Thiram + Metalaxyl to prevent damping-off. Calculate seed rate: 80–100 kg/ha for direct seeding.
Planting
Direct-sow seeds at 5 cm depth, 10 cm within row, 50 cm between rows on raised beds. Two rows per 1 m bed. Place DAP (50 kg/ha) in planting furrow, 5 cm from seed.
Germination Check
Check germination at Day 5–7 (should be >85%). Replant gaps with pre-germinated seed to ensure uniform stand.
IPM Scouting Start
Begin weekly pest scouting log. Check for: bean fly (Ophiomyia spp.) — look for mines on cotyledons; spider mites on leaf undersides; thrips in flowers; aphid colonies. Record all findings.
Bean Fly Control
Bean fly (Ophiomyia spp.) is the #1 pest of French beans in Kenya. If infestation detected, spray Cypermethrin or Dimethoate, but observe Pre-Harvest Interval (PHI) strictly. Document all sprays with chemical name, rate, date.
Irrigation Schedule
Irrigate at 3 mm/day equivalent during vegetative phase. Use drip or overhead sprinkler (only in early morning). Consistent moisture prevents pod cracking.
Weed Control
Hand-weed thoroughly at 2 weeks. No herbicides on French beans destined for export — residue risk. Clean field also reduces thrips and spider mite refugia.
